The (2nd) Halfway Milestone

Written in July 2026.

This past June, I hit $500k net worth. It’s a different kind of “halfway” compared to the milestone I celebrated last year.

Something I didn’t anticipate: upon reaching this milestone, I didn’t feel as happy as I thought I would.

I think some bad timing was involved – the past couple months have been the worst I’ve felt in quite a while.

I suspect that my job is a factor – I like what I do and still want to stay at the same employer (for now), but the work can be pretty demanding and the stress has taken a noticeable toll on my mental health.

Some of the feeling must come from being in the middle of the Boring Middle. Reaching $500k brought on a strong sense of accomplishment, immediately followed by impatience coupled with the realization that I still have a while to go before reaching FI.

My mind is currently set on reaching a 7-figure net worth, but I don’t think $1 million is my FI number (and at this point in time I’m not completely sure what my FI number should be).

My reaction gave me pause to consider my mental health more seriously. I’m now pondering whether or not some of the habits I’ve developed from my commitment to a FI journey may be a contributing factor.

It’s been so long since I last posted. I’m going to paste a rough net worth breakdown here, in hopes that I’ll be able to look back at it as a reminder to my future self where I was (and hopefully, for my future self: how far I’ve progressed).

516 090 – Net worth (July 2026)
232 173 – Non-registered
164 875 – TFSA
46 841 – FHSA
68 201 – RRSP
4 000 – Emergency savings

As I write this, it’s also coincidentally another ‘halfway’ point (for the calendar year, with the arrival of July).

It feels like a good time to assess whether I’m heading in the direction I want, and work towards making the most out of the remaining time before year-end. I’m not yet sure what exactly that will look like.
